Amkor Posts Record Q2 as AI Chip Demand Reshapes Semiconductor Supply Chain

Amkor Technology reported a record second quarter on surging AI packaging demand, even as it guided Q3 below consensus. Across the chip supply chain, capacity investment is accelerating: Nvidia has taken a $5 billion stake in Safe Superintelligence, the U.S. government holds a CHIPS-linked equity stake in GlobalFoundries, and Skyworks and Qorvo are consolidating into one company.

Amkor Technology posted a record second-quarter as AI infrastructure demand pushed outsourced chip packaging volumes higher.1 The company's guidance for the third quarter came in below consensus, signaling the boom is not uniform across every part of the supply chain.1

The capacity buildout extends beyond packaging. Memory makers are locking in long-term AI server DRAM supply deals, and equipment suppliers are reporting record quarters tied to packaging tools needed for advanced AI chips.

Capital is flowing into the sector from multiple directions. Nvidia has taken a $5 billion stake in Safe Superintelligence, a bet on AI compute demand translating into chip orders. The U.S. government has taken a CHIPS Act-linked equity stake in GlobalFoundries, tying public capacity investment directly to a domestic chipmaker's balance sheet.

Consolidation is following the same demand curve. Skyworks and Qorvo announced a merger, with leadership already set for the combined company. "Today's announcement reflects the strong partnership that has shaped our integration planning efforts from the very beginning," said Bob Bruggeworth.2 "I am confident these leaders will help foster collaboration across our teams as we build on the engineering excellence, innovation, and customer focus that have long distinguished both organizations."2

Networking infrastructure for AI is drawing new partnerships as well. Kalray and Bull are teaming up to develop next-generation high-speed networks built for AI and high-performance computing workloads.3 "As AI continues to redefine infrastructure needs across every sector, we are excited to offer technologies that deliver greater performance, flexibility and efficiency," said Éric Baissus.3 The companies aim to build solutions for the next generation of AI and HPC systems while creating long-term customer value.3

Leadership transitions are also underway at the top of the chip ecosystem, with Apple's succession from Tim Cook to Jeff Williams-adjacent leadership signaling change even as underlying product cycles continue.4 Together, the earnings, equity stakes, and consolidation point to a semiconductor sector scaling capacity as fast as AI infrastructure demand requires, with occasional caution at the margins.1
